This memorial commemorates the ‘Fallen’ of villagers who lost their lives in the two World Wars of the 20th Century. Most of those listed on this memorial are WW1 casualties. Unlike the nearby village of Fulstow (which only erected a war memorial in 2008) North Cotes has had a war memorial since the early 1920s.
Each year, on Remembrance Sunday, and sometimes at other times, villagers lay poppy wreaths at the memorial. Some of these can be seen in the above photograph.
Behind the War Memorial is the road leading to the former RAF North Coates airfield. In the churchyard across the road from this memorial is a plot owned by and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which contains 40 graves dating from WW1 until 1965.
