Additional information

Introduction

Hethersgill is a north Cumbrian ecclesiastical and civil parish and is mainly rural in character. The Parish Church (Church of England) is dedicated to St Mary.

The Hethersgill War Memorial, in the form of a runic (Celtic) cross, was unveiled on 11 June 1920 to commemorate the parishioners who had lost their lives during the 1914 - 1918 war. It is located in the front part churchyard close to the passing in front of St Mary's church [Photograph No. 1]. The names of eleven parishioners who died in the war are engraved on the plinth at the front of the memorial [Photograph N. 2].

In 1921, another parishioner who had served in the First World War died of wounds received in the war and his name was subsequently added to the rear of the memorial [Photograph No. 3]. During the Second World War (1939 - 1945) there were three parishioners who lost their lives. After the war, their names were subsequently added to the left-hand side panel of the memorial [Photograph No. 4].
