Commemorating July 16 in Nice
This ceremony commemorates the infamous "Rafle du Vel' d'Hiv' " in Paris, which took place on July 16, 1942, and which rounded up all the Jews, French and foreign, whose names were on the lists at the Commissariats.
The ceremony in Nice took place on the platform of the railway station where the Jews who were arrested in Nice and its area were put on trains and deported, first to Drancy, near Paris, then
to Auschwitz or other death camps. Very few came back to Nice.
There were speeches made by the representative of the state, and by the leaders of various associations, calling for tolerance, and remembrance.
This year, for the first time, the event was cordoned off by the police, and noone was allowed near unless they presented some credentials. It goes to show that the situation in France is not
peaceful, and that there is a lot to fear from all sorts of fanatics and extremists.

I am pleased to see the event still went ahead regardless of th views of some people. The events regarding the Holocaust, and in France the deportations of Jewish people in France, should be commemorated and remembered. Otherwise, as a civilised society how shall we ever learn never to repeat the same events?
