Gallantry in Tunisia
Sergeant John Branthwaite (Service No 5054670), Army Air Corps, was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in North Africa. Originally from the village of Moor Row before moving to Thursby near Carlisle, Cumberland (now Cumbria) Sergeant Branthwaite was awarded MM for an action in Tunisia. According to the citation he led a section of 7 men against a much larger enemy force. During this successful action 20 of the enemy were killed, 24 captured and the rest were routed.
The award of the MM was in the 'London Gazette' supplement of 22 April 1943 (pp. 1846 / 1847):
"The King has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North Africa: -
The Military Medal
............................
No. 5054670 Sergeant John Branthwaite, Army Air Corps (Thursby)".
A report of the award also appeared in 'The Whitehaven News' on Thursday 6 May 1943.
