Tribute to Roy Chadwick, "father" of the Avro Lancaster Bomber

Roy Chadwick, CBE, FRAeS (1893 – 1947) was the 'father' of the Avro Lancaster Bomber, one of the most widely used aircraft of RAF Bomber Command durng WW2. He was born at Farnworth, Widnes, which was then in Lancashire (now Cheshire). Roy Chadwick was Chief Designer for Avro. In addition to the Lancaster, he also designed the Avro Lincoln and the preliminary designs for the Avro Vulcan Bomber.

On 23 August 1947 Roy Chadwick would lose his life in a tragic aircraft accident when the Avro Tudor aircraft he was flying in crashed while taking off from Woodford airfield. There are a number of tributes to Roy Chadwick including one at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at the wartime R.A.F. East Kirkby at Spilsby, Lincolnshire [Photograph No. 1]. This museum is primarily dedicated to telling the story of RAF Bomber Command and local wartime life in Lincolnshire (the RAF's wartime "Bomber county"). The potrait of Roy Chadwick was unveiled at the on 20 April 1991 by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, V.C. (whose photograph can be also seen to the left of the painiting of Roy Chadwick in this photograph).

The museum has its own Lancaster Bomber, known as 'Just Jane', which can be seen in Photographs No. 2 and 3 (above). Although 'Just Jane' has not been airworthy for many years, in September 2014 two airworthy Lancaster Bombers flew over the former wartime RAF East Kirkby airfield. For the first time in many years it was therefore possible to see three Lancaster Bombers at the same time.

This was a fine tribute to the Lancaster Bomber, the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, the wartime RAF Bomber Command and the Lancaster Bomber's designer, Roy Chadwick.
