Could I ask you to read Q.18 in the FAQ? I am a Member and I have a long story to Post, is that acceptable?

I am surprised at this gentle reminder Peter as Nicks stories have been keeping this blog alive
I would also like to say that i think they make better reading as a whole rather than being broken into separate paragraph posts.

I am surprised in turn at your own response to Peter’s “gentle reminder” which, I would remind you, was addressed to us all.
Long term users of this Blog will know that over-lengthy postings do tend to irritate the eye and are easily avoided by using the “Comments” field to break the story up into two more easily digestible parts.
Like yourself, I have been enjoying Niccar’s contributions to the Blog but would humbly suggest that divisible comments such as “Nicks stories have been keeping this blog alive” are uncalled for and frankly unhelpful.

I entirely agree with you where you say that stories make better reading as a whole rather than being broken into separate paragraph posts.
There has never been any suggestion that contributions be broken into separate paragraph Posts. Nor is there a need to break up any story, no matter how long, into separate paragraphs in the Comments section, no matter how long it is.
I have suggested a chapter length of about 3,000 words - this is simply for ease of reading and does not mean that Comments should not exceed 3,000 words. This is simply a question of style and of course can be ignored.
In sum, you are more than welcome to send an entire book to the Comments section, but doing so in the Posts section would clearly swamp it.

in any way unhelpful only to point out that Niccar's stories had for the best part of September been the only stories posted and that I felt that although they were maybe a bit long. The quality justified that.

fact is that Niccar has not contributed anything - so far - in September - BUT Nick Clark has contributed three postings....all long ones !
- so far - yourself - Peter and Catherine complete the line up for September -
Niccar is the chap who served with the "Mad Micks' of 78th Div and Nick Clark is the Naval type !

I'm sure you didn't mean to be unhelpful and you probably caught me in an off moment. There is one area of using the "COMMENT" mode that I find a too little disconcerting and so I'll air it here.
You cannot modify or edit a comment once you have posted, this is a BLOG thing and beyond Peter's control. So...be warned....draft your message first in WORD or any text editor and then Copy & Paste into the Blog itself.

It seems I have broken a few rules that have upset some people and if that is the case
I can only tender my apologies and say being a recent newcomer to this site and being an ardent reader I spend most of the time trolling through the months of 2006 and am fascinated by some of the postings and comments so any comments I make are along the same lines factual and honest and I hope not too long

don't worry about it - we have all broken rules at some point or other - some of them just beg to be broken - Peter was addressing all of us and no one in particular - his point is a good one as scrolling down through long postings can be a pain in the bum - no matter how interesting the subject.
Many of the subjects we have covered in the past have been extremely good and I don't blame you for reading through them all - I do it myself at times - just to refresh my memory - and to make a comment I might have just thought about... it all helps to leave something for the younger element...so just you carry on as you have been doing - your story's are always welcome !!!

You haven't broken ANY rules Niccar, primarily because there are no rules to break. The longer the stories are the better. We just can't get enough and all are most welcome.
We are tied to the Google blog format and thus can't give an initial index as in all forums. I tried to suggest emulating that by keeping Posts short and expanding on Comments. But no one is going to be drummed out for ignoring my suggestion. It's just that where the real action takes place in a blog is in the Comments.

I agree that not been able to edit Comments is annoying. My way of doing things is this: I compose my Comment thoughtfully and carefully. I then check it for errors, spelling, etc, and the send it off satisfied.
Then within three seconds of it being published I invariably spot two typos and an illogical paragraph.
At that point I copy it all (c+Ctl) and bin the comment. Then paste and correct the typos.

Peter I wish you had pointed me to your post of 31st August 2006 it is a more succint description of the way you are trying to get us to proceed. I agree that it is by far a much better way to go about things.

I think Peter's guidance is best, if everyone can remember to follow it. In most cases it should be possible, with some forethought, to put 2 - 3 paragraphs and possibly a photograph to introduce a subject and then add the rest of a story under 'Comments'. it does make it easier scrolling down to look at previous postings when new ones have been added.
Nick Clark here ...(the 'Naval Type') a little red faced and feeling guilty!
However, I agree with Peter as it would make more sense so will follow this in future.
Nothing worse than all that scrolling .....had to do a fair bit just to add my moments here! Lol!

your stories are always welcome bringing the Naval touch to the scene which has been lacking for some time - particularly where they did such an outstanding job in the Med when all was going against us for too long !
now we need a contributor from the RAF to explain how easy it was to give us their "friendly" fire now and again !
Had an ex Desert Air Force type driving a helicopter from Soldiers Field, Chicago to Pallatine way over the other side of Chicago - he asked me to keep an eye out on my side of the cockpit and as I was turning my head I asked him what I was looking for - Just at that point a ruddy great DC 8 passed within a hundred feet of us ! - I kept both eyes wide open !
