Jewish ATS Volunteers from Palestine

Catherine L has sent me this previously unseen poster from Palestine of the 1940's that shows how Jewish volunteers were urged to join the ATS.

In all honesty, I never stopped to think that such encruitment took place so perhaps Catherine herself will tell us more about the poster by making a comment on this posting ?

I think this poster comes from the Yad Vashem website, though I am not sure, I saved it a while ago. Yes, women in Palestine were urged to join the British Army and I actually know of one who did, she worked as a nurse in Palestine.

It was of course weird at first to be working alongside the army some were fighting not so long ago, but on the other hand, the fight against the Nazis came first.

The British needed all the help they could get and all these eager volunteers were welcome.

It looks a really good poster, showing pictorially some of the tasks an ATS girl might do. There were many important tasks to do.

Don't know what happened to my 0riginal comment but it disappeared on me ....all I had to say was that i met some of these girls when I was in hospital at Bari - there were also some non jewish from Cairo and elswhere - they were doing all the useul things the ATS did in those days - driving - clerking and cooking - some visited friends in the same hospital I was in.
