Crosthwaite Parish, Keswick, Cumbria.
The Church of England parish of Crosthwaite, Keswick, Cumbria (previously Cumberland) is dedicated to St Kentigern (also known as St Mungo in other parts of Cumbria and Scotland). Tradition has it that Kentigern (or Mungo) came to this district in the 6th Century A.D. It was around that time that it is believed the first Christian church was founded on the site of the present Crosthwaite Parish Church.
Among the famous people of past times linked to Crosthwaite parish, Keswick are the former Poet Laureate, Robert Southey, and a former Vicar of the Parish, Canon Herdwicke Drummond Rawnsley, a canon of Carlisle Cathedral. Both Robert Southey and Canon Rawnsley are interred in the churchyard. There are also memorials dedicated to Robert Southey and Canon Rawnsley within the church.
Arguably, one of the best-known published works of Robert Southey is the story of "The Three Bears". Robert Southey's "Three Bears" story was later rewritten as "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" ("Who's been eating my porridge?").
Canon Rawnsley, who was a Canon of Carlisle Cathedral, led a very active life and had a wide circle of well-connected friends and acquaintances. For example, he was a close personal friend of the former American President, Woodrow Wilson - one of the principal architects of the 1919 Versailles Peace Treaty. Canon Rawnsley had also been a chaplain to both the King and the Border Regiment Territorials. He held the military rank of Colonel.
Within the walls of the church there are three war memorials to commemorating the 'Fallen' of Crosthwaite parish in different wars. The oldest commemorates the war dead of the Boer War. The other two war memorials commemorate those who died in the First World War and the Second World War. For the sake of completeness, a transcription of all three memorials has been included below.
