Some biographical details
Private Robert Lees (1924 - 1944) from William Morris Avenue, Cleator Moor, Cumberland (now Cumbria) served with the York & Lancs Regiment during WW2. He was killed in action in the Far East on 21 April 1944, having been in the army for about a year. His final resting place is at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar (Burma), Grave Ref. 3.G.10. He is commemorated on the Cleator Moor 'Roll of Honour'.
Robert Lees was the eldest son of the late Robert Lees and Florence Lees (née Taggart). His siblings were Florence (born 1922) and Edward (born 1926). Robert Lees (Senior), a retired grocer, had passed away about four months before his son.
Robert Lees (Junior) was well known and well liked in the Cleator Moor district. As a young lad Robert (Junior) had attended Cleator Council School. Prior to joining the army, he had been employed by Dobson & Musgrave of Whitehaven for about 3 years. Robert Lees had also been a fine rugby player and had captained the school team.
