Some biographical details
Lance Corporal John Henry Nicholson was killed in France on 1 June 1940 during the withdrawal of the B.E.F. to the Dunkirk beaches. He was a Territorial with the 5th Battalion The Border Regiment, which he had joined 12 years earlier. Lance Corporal Nicholson was a native of Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) and at the time of his death was 30 years old.
Lance Corporal John Henry Nicholson was the son of James Benn Nicholson and Elizabeth Nicholson (née Hodgson). He was married to Sarah Ann Nicholson (née Stewart) and they had three surviving children: Joan (born 1934), John Henry (Jnr.) (born 1937) and Mary Rose (born 1935). The family home was at Moffat's Court, Fox Lane, Whitehaven.
Between the wars, Lance Corporal John Henry Nicholson had been well known in West Cumbbrian football circles. In particular, at different times he was linked to the local sides Whitehaven Athletic and Wellington Villa.
Initially, Lance Corporal Nicholson was officially posted as missing as from 1 June 1940 and then posted as having been killed in action. His final resting place is at Warhem Communal Cemetery, France (Grave Ref.: Row A, Grave 23). Lance Corporal John Henry Nicholson is commemorated on the WW2 memorial for St Begh's R.C. Parish, Whitehaven and also in the Borough of Whitehaven WW2 'Book of Remembrance'.
