Additional information

Thursby's War Memorial

The village and parish of Thursby is in the post-1974 county of Cumbria (previously in Cumberland). It is approximately 10 Km (6 miles) south-west of Cumbria's capital city, Carlisle.

Close to the centre of the village is the Parish Church (Church of England) dedicated to St Andrew mainly built to the design of 1846 (Photograph No 1 above). Thursby's population remains relatively small compared to a number of neighbouring villages (approximately 500 for most of the first half of the 20th Century). At the time of the 2001 census Thursby's population had grown to 1185. This was due in part to newly built housing catering for daily commuting to Carlisle.

Within the churchyard is Thursby's War Memorial. It honours all those from the village who served in the Armed Forces during the two World Wars (Photograph No 2 above). The memorial also honours the villagers who lost their lives in the two World Wars: two from the First World War and four from the Second World War.
