Some biographical information
Lieutenant Patrick McLaughlin was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) in 1901. He enlisted to the Border Regiment in August 1919 at the age of 18 and became a regular soldier. In 1921 he went first overseas with the army.
Lt. McLaughlin died of wounds received while on active service in Tunisia after 24 years in the army. At the time of his death, Lt. McLaughlin was 42 years old. He left behind him a wife and one child living in the Carlisle area of Cumberland.
While serving as a regular his service included postings to Shanghai and India. Patrick McLaughlin returned to the U.K. in June 1939 with the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant (Q.M.S.). In 1940, he was granted a commission with the Border Regiment and was subsequently attached to the Northamptonshire Regiment.
Lt. Patrick McLaughlin is commemorated on the WW2 War Memorial of St Begh's R.C. Parish, Whitehaven.
