Some biographical information
Private Albert Lowe (1919 - 1940) was killed in action on 1 June 1940 while serving with the 5th Battalion The Border Regiment in France. At the time of his death, Private Lowe was 21 years old. He had joined the Territorials before the outbreak of war and had embarked for France with his battalion earlier in 1940.
Private Albert Lowe was the son of Samuel Lowe and Mary Lowe (née Casson) of Buttermere Avenue, Seacliffe, Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria). Immediately after the Dunkirk evacuation he was officially posted as missing. His parents subsequently received news that he had been killed in action. His final resting place is at Warhem Communal Cemetery, Nord France (Grave Ref. Row B. Grave 9).
In civilian life, Albert Lowe was employed as a coal miner at Haig Pit, Kells, Whitehaven. He was also a keen sportsman.
He is commemorated in the Borough of Whitehaven WW2 'Book of Remembrance' and also on the WW2 memorial of St Begh's R.C. Parish, Whitehaven.
