Some biographical information
Lance Sergeant Hugh McCormick, R.A. from Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) was killed in action in the Tobruk area in North Africa on 10 April 1941 at the age of 31. According to his obituary in 'The Whitehaven News', Lance Sergeant McCormick was killed by a bomb explosion.
He was the husband of Mrs Annie McCormick (nee Taggerty) whom he had married in 1930. They lived at Howgill Cottages, Low Road, Whitehaven. Hugh and Annie McCormick had no surviving children.
Hugh McCormick had been with the Territorials (Artillery) since the age of 17. He was called up on the outbreak of war and had also seen action in Norway as well as the Middle East.
Hugh McCormick was a Roman Catholic by religion and he is commemorated on the WW2 memorial of St Begh's R.C. Parish, Whitehaven. He is also commemorated in the Borough of Whitehaven WW2 'Book of Remembrance'.
In civilian life, Hugh McCormick was employed by the Whitehaven Brick & Tile Co. for some years after leaving school. Later, he had been employed in the coal mining industry at Haig Pit, Kells, Whitehavn.
