Wetheral Parish and the war memorial
Wetheral parish is in northern Cumbria and a rural deanery of Carlisle bordering the river Eden. Prior to the 1974 local re-organisation of local government in England and Wales Wetheral was in the county of Cumberland.
Wetheral Parish Church (Church of England) is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and St Constantine [Photograph No. 1]. The parish war memorial is the lychgate gives entrance to the church grounds [Photograph No. 2]. It was originally dedicated on 10 July 1921 following the First World War and was built according to a design by Mr J.H. Martindale.
On the front of the gate is the following inscription:
"To the Glorious Memory of those from this parish, who in the Great War, in defence of God, King and Country, pass through the grave and gate of death, this gate is erected.
1914 - 1918."
The names of the 14 parishioners who died in the 1914 - 1918 war are listed on wooden panels inside the lychgate. The intention was that this would be a lasting and fitting memorial for all who passed through these gates.
Following the Second World War, the dates 1939 -1945 was added to the gate. Two wooden panels listing the names of another 14 parishioners who had lost their lives in the Second World War were added to the interior of the lych gate.
In 2009 the War Memorials Trust gave a grant towards the conservation and repair of the lychgate, including some of the sandstone wall and the eaves of wooden oak. Additionally, a new wooden panel was added to the memorial to remember the life of former parishioner Corporal Sarah Bryant (née Feely) who lost her life while on active service with the Army in Afghanistan in 2008. Poignantly, Sarah Feely and Carl Bryant had married at Wetheral Parish Church in 2005. Inside the church there is also a Book of Remembrance.
At Remembrance time each November parishioners and well-wishers place poppy wreaths and crosses inside the lychgate which remain there throughout the year [Photograph No. 3]. In particular, there is a poppy wreath from the parish for 'The Fallen' of each World War and a poppy cross for Corporal Bryant who died in Afghanistan [Photograph No. 4].
