An important new link
The Web never ceases to amaze me. Delving deeper from an interesting link sent to me by Tom, I discovered that the entire 50 volume New Zealand official history of WW2 was on the Internet. Needless to say, this is a vast source covering all aspects of WW2. Too good not to link to.

of particular interest to myself and all those who struggled through the Gothic Line knowing that there were no more reinforcemnts to follow was the imbecilic decision to send the Four French and Three US Divisions into the South of France for that abortive campaign.
Thus losing our strength to follow on through the Balkans and possibly halt the roller coaster
Russian ride into Europe for the next cold war 40 years - The New Zealand account is a worthwhile read - "From Cassino to Triete"

further to that South of France decision was the other decision to really castrate the 8th Army by denuding them of the 1st and 5th Brit Inf Divs plus the two Canadian Divs, the 1st Inf and the 5th Armoured who also went to make up the original five divisons of Canada fighting in Belgium at that time and clearing the coast. This left the 8th Army almost unable to walk let alone fight.With a total of 14 divisions gone to be replaced by an untried Japanese/American Div plus a Brazilian Div.Earlier we had lost th 51st Div; 50th Div and 7th Armoured to France plus the odd Armoured Bde. We were astonished that we made it all the way to the Alps - thus building the legend that the 8th Army had fought from Alamein to the Alps. !
