Private William Lithgow, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, from Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) was one of the eight children - and the eldest son - of Richard Lithgow and Mary Lithgow (nee McLean). He was drowned at Normanton-on-Soar on 17 May 1942 while on active service.
At the time of his death, Private Lithgow was 22 years old. In WW2 the family home was at 67 High Road, Arrowthwaite, Kells, Whitehaven.
Private Lithgow was buried in Whitehaven Cemetery (Grave 5 / H / 176). The epitaph on the headstone is 'Worthy of Remembrance'. In addition, Private Lithgow was commemorated on a memorial vase at another family plot in Whitehaven Cemetery and is listed in the WW2 Borough of Whitehaven 'Book of Remembrance'.
