Arguably, Sir Barnes Neville Wallis, Kt,. C.B.E., R.D.I., F.R.A.e.S., F.I.C.E., F.I.Mech. E., F.R.S. is best remembered as the inventor of the 'bouncing bomb' used by 617 Squadron during their famous 'Dambusters Raid' of 16 / 17 May 1943 ("Operation Chastise") which set out from RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. During his career, Sir Barnes Wallis also worked on designs of airships and aeroplanes.
Sir Barnes Wallis passed away on 30 October 1979 at the age of 92 and was interred in St Lawrence Churchyard at Effingham, Surrey where he had lived with formany years with his wife, Lady Mary Frances Wallis. The headstone memorial was made from Honister slate from the Lake District.
Lady Mary Wallis passed away on 1 January 1986. She was subsequently laid to rest in the same grave as Sir Barnes (after the date of the above photograph).
