Aspatria War memorial
(WW2 casualties)

At the main entrance to Aspatria's War Memorial Recreation Ground is a metal tablet listing the names of Aspatrians who have lost their lives in the service of their country during WW1 (1914 - 1918) and WW2 (1939 - 1945) [Photograph No. 1]. Of the names listed on the entrance gates, the bottom two lines list the 28 names of Aspatrians who lost their lives during WW2.

Around the park one tree has been planted for each Aspatrian who died in the service of their country. Thus, there are 28 trees representing the 'Fallen' of WW2. Some of the trees planted to preserve the memory of Aspatria's 'Fallen' can be seen in the background of Photograph No. 1 (above).

The Parish Church of Aspatria (Church of England) is dedicated to St Kentigern [Photograph No. 2]. Inside the church, next to the Royal British Legion standard, is a wooden commemorative tablet listing the names of Aspatria's WW2 casualties [Photograph No. 3].

The wording on this memorial, which can be seen in Photograph No. 4, is as follows:

Dedication

This article is dedicated to the sons of Aspatria who gave their lives during the Second World War. Some of them were laid to rest in the churchyard of their home town of Aspatria, some were laid to rest in cemeteries elsewhere and some have no known resting place. Wherever they lie, Aspatria was dear to their hearts and minds.

In their turn, the townsfolk of Aspatria have continued to remember the sacrifice of their fellow citizens who died in the Second World War. In conclusion, one may think of the following poem "I Vow to Thee, My Country" by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, subsequently set to music by Gustav Holst:

I Vow to Thee, My Country

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

I heard my country calling, away across the sea,
Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me.
Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,
And round her feet are lying the dying and the dead.
I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns,
I haste to thee my mother, a son among thy sons.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
...................

[Words by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice
Music by Gutav Holst].

May they rest in peace!
